Prisoners get Right to Vote

In a move that is likely to prove unpopular with the General public, the Government is set to fall into compliance with the findings of the European Court of Human Rights – that Prisoners must have the right to Vote.

A Convicted Killer brought the case to the European Court several years ago which found the ban on right to vote to convicted prisoners to be unlawful against Human Rights Laws. The prime minister has stated he can see no way of keeping the ban. He is however expected to resist allowing the vote to people convicted of more serious offenses.

It has been suggested that prisoners should be voting based on their last address to avoid prisons effecting the natural voting of a single constituency. This would be a practical approach.  Some governors of prisons believe that the right to vote is part of becoming rehabilitated and enabling the return to society as a productive member.
