Could an MP live on £3 a day?

Published by calhoun on September 24th, 2010 - in Politics

With all the cuts going on with the current government perhaps they forget what living in the UK is really like. Who can blame them with their state funded mansions and country holiday homes and business first class trips all around the world ? I know I’ve adapted nicely to being paid more than minimum wage, and I don’t want to go back. But I have not forgotten the horror of the past I have came from.

The National Minimum Wage is to put simply a Joke. Currently set at £5.80. Lets break that down.

Gross Wage: £232 (based on 40 hours)
National Insurance: £13.42
Tax: £34.92
Net Wage: £197.08

Monthly Wage: £854
Rent: £400
Gas and Electricity: £100
Food and Drink: £200
Transport Costs: £100
Net Monthly Wage: £54

Now lets pay the council tax … err£100?

Monthly Spending Money: £-46

So we apply for working tax credits and council tax and local housing benefits, say £150 a month if we’re lucky?

So putting that into the equation our new monthly wage is £104 ,  £3 a day plus £0.4 that you can save up for a holiday on.

The so called benefits life style is really not a lifestyle choice , its more of a we’re over taxed and under represented by our parliament. Surely if the MPs believe that this is a fair amount they wont mind living off of that themselves? They can get a modest 1 bedroom flat paid for, with basic food and drink and a subway or bus pass to get to parliament and a £3 a day allowance for a year. I wonder how quickly there will be a bill brought to the house about a new rather significant rise in minimum wage?

Abused by MPs

Published by calhoun on August 25th, 2010 - in Politics

The government has been in parliament for less than a year, yet already abuse of the system has occurred. David Cameron already has been under fire for his huge mortgage payments under the expenses system.

MPs have been intimidating staff at the Independant Parliamentary Standards Authority. The IPSA is responsible for investigation of the parliament specifically into Parliamentary Expenses. To the disgust of MPs, to claim on expenses like anyone else they must hand in a receipt of purchase so no longer can they claim £30,000 on a toilet seat. Equally, refurbishment of their homes are not an acceptable.

A backbencher charged in with three brutes to complain about the investigations into expenses. If anyone knows why a backbench MP requires 3 supporters other than to help him walk for being so fat on the corporate lunches.

MP Blackmailer of 38Degrees

Published by calhoun on August 9th, 2010 - in Politics

In what seems to be the latest scandal involving a British Member of Parliament, Dominic Raab, Conservative MP for Esher & Walton has threatened action against the campaign group 38Degrees.

38Degrees are a campaign group campaigning for many things, most notably they were a leading campaigner against the bill proposed by the Evil Lord Mandelson: The Digital Economy Bill. They currently are in support of the Alternative Voting Method. They operate a quite legitimate and helpful website for communicating with your local MP.

MP, Dominic RaabHowever on, the now infamous Dominic Raab has declared he doesn’t want to be contacted by constituents. Hey wait a minute, Isnt that his job to listen to the people he reportedly serves?

MPs must realise that when elected they must put up with the consequences of the job. If they are not prepared to listen to the needs and wishes of the people whom put them in their job why bother running for the election at all. Of course, I am not surprised that he doesn’t want to listen: he is a conservative MP after all.

In an attempt at blackmail, he threatened to make a complaint about the 38Degrees site to the Information Commissioner whom oversees personal data in accordance to the Data Protection Act. However the website have already been in contact with the Information Commissioner and have been told they are not likely to be in breach of the Data Protection Act.

So in future, remember this at this next election: Dominic Raab Does not want to be contacted you probably should not vote for him either (or the conservatives for that matter).
