Is the Irish government collapse a sign of what is to come in Britain?

Published by calhoun on January 23rd, 2011 - in News, Politics

Government ProblemsIreland is having a rough period it seems from financial collapse of the economy to the latest in a series of problems. The Irish Green Party has abandoned a coalition government which means the ruling party of Ireland no longer has a majority government.

In a face saving effort, worthy of what Gordon Brown should have done, the Fianna Fail leader and Prime minister has agreed to step down as party leader. He has however opted to remain as Prime Minister of Ireland until a general election – provided they last that long.

In response, Green leader Mr Gormley stated: “Our patience has reached an end”. Irish labour party has called for a vote of no-confidence later this week the result of which will likely cause a general election and a new government will be faced with many problems.

As part of a bailout for the financial troubles, the International Monetary fund and European Central bank has insisted the Government secure a substantial hike in Tax. If the government breaks up before that, negotiations may well need to begin once again to secure a financial bailout.

Comparing with the government back home, it is clear that a delicate balance between the Conservative and Liberal Democrats exists. The general consensus that most people voted against Labour rather than for the conservatives will not make the government’s position here any stronger.

In the event of a desertion of the coalition here, the opposition would likely be in a position to call for a vote of no confidence in the leadership here. The resulting general election would most likely swing back to Labour. The Liberal Democrats have a tarnished reputation mostly due to going against education like their pre-election promises.

Gordon Brown to become a Saint

Published by calhoun on September 2nd, 2010 - in Politics

Gordon Brown freshly out of screwing up the economy and Labour party wants to become a Saint now. It is quite a promotion I’d say.

Freshly criticized by Tony Blair in his memoirs, he is attempting to put away the image of being the evil man that no one wanted and no one could get rid of. He has made announcements to do a number of charitable projects without pay. Of course, given that his salary is huge as it is and his interest payments probably equally high so its not exactly like he’s doing great efforts he can afford to not be paid!

Gordon BrownAmongst many accusations, Gordon Brown has been accused most prominently by Tony Blair accusations range from blackmail to having no emotional intelligence. These seem to be entirely accurate accusations given what he looks like.

His activities will be paid for by a number of speaking appointments and the couple will setup a office by the highly original name of : The Office of Gordon Brown and Sarah Brown. Just a testament to the former prime ministers skills as a innovative and creative leader.

Scarily, Gordon Brown accepted a position on the World Wide Web Foundation. This is deeply concerning as untill now I thought only competent people would get involved in organizations like that.

I wonder if his newly setup office will be ran from his home so he can claim expenses against it on his official MP tab ?

Blair: It was Gordon Browns Fault

Published by calhoun on September 1st, 2010 - in Politics

Tony Blair ImageWith a slight hint of blame, former prime minister Tony Blair has pointed at Gordon Brown as the reason Labour was defeated in the General Election. I cant say i disagree however, Gordon Browns leadership was perhaps the worst time as prime minister in the history of UK politics.

Particularly blaming Gordon Brown’s failure to stand by New Labour policies in an attempt to take Labour back to the old days before they won their landslide election. His criticism of this also could be seen to infer a support of David Miliband as the future party leader. He does not however go so far as to officially support either candidates.

Keeping Gordon Brown under control as he was unable to make him disappear Tony Blair found himself turning into an alcoholic with Whisky, Gin and Tonic for pre dinner followed by several wines for dinner.

He says getting rid of Mr Brown would have been impossible but agrees that it should have been done. I am sure that many would agree with that assessment. At least however he got the job because no one else actually wanted it a fact that Gordon Brown will undoubtedly be reminded of by his critiques at any opportunity.
