Rail network set to expand by 2019

Published by calhoun on November 25th, 2010 - in News, Politics

Overcrowded TrainOvercrowding on trains is not exactly a new concept – our railway network has been split up into private companies all sharing rolling stock and track in some monolithic monstrosity of a national railway infrastructure.

As a result of this break up of the railway infrastructure, corporations are more interested in keeping their costs down than providing an adequate railway service. Far too often are trains running late.

Looking across the EU, we can see that privatized railway infrastructure has been implemented in a way which allows the government to inventiveness a good running service – fines for late trains, termination of operation contract in the event of a company not fulfilling their obligations to the successful operation of the railway.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond has announced that £6Bn is to be spent on the Thameslink route which covers the south coast of England with towns north of London. From about Bedford to Brighton via London to be more precise. I am certain that the London routes indeed to generate a significant amount of traffic for the railway network. However, this is not the only railway route in Britain. Numerous times on my local train service into Manchester its been very overcrowded , running late or even not running at all.

What the UK really needs is a substantial investment in the entire national infrastructure. A program that would see services run regularly and even 24 hours, high speed links between cities such as Glasgow , Edinburgh and London.  This sort of investment would be considerable but the economic gains from UK transport infrastructure would far outweigh any costs associated with repairing the railway network.

They say parts of the North West England routes will be electrified starting next year and should be completed by 2016. This too will be beneficial but only goes so far. The cost of this upgrade however is going to be borne by the general public in the form of large fare increases on trains. This really is not a justified approach – high costs of public transport will push people onto low cost high pollution emmiting vehicles instead.

If I had my way, during peak hours, 4 services an hour on most routes, 2 at all other times around the clock and free fares for travel within council areas would exist. It will incentivize people to take the train instead of the car and keep our CO2 emissions low.

Science acuses Dogs of being more inteligent than Cats

Published by calhoun on November 24th, 2010 - in News, Technology

Cat and DogThe people at Oxford have spent their time in some quacking mad study that claims that Dogs are a more intelligent animal than Cats. The news is surely set to cause a rift between Cat and Dog Owners world wide. Albeit no useful science has came out of the study.

The research summarizes that living in a social environment and group takes more cognitive processing than living an isolated solitary life which seems to suggest that animals which have larger brains tend to be more social.

Like in humans however, having more brains does not necessarily indicate usage of said brain. So whilst a Dog may indeed have a physically larger brain than cats, based on the behaviour of the dogs i have seen it seems highly unlikely they are using their brain capacity to any useful extent.

Become rich and you’ll lose your home.

Published by calhoun on November 23rd, 2010 - in News, Politics

Monopoly HousePlans proposed in the government’s infinite wisdom could see people evicted from their homes if they get a wage rise. What a wonderful incentive to stay on benefits instead of serving as a economic boost for the country. The plan however does seem to be limited to those tennants that are living in council property not the private sector tennants. Which likely limits the number of people who are going to be effected by the scheme – I dont know anyone who is living in council property. I dont even know where council property exists anymore everything seems to have been taken up by the private sector now.

Further, the councils in control of the properties are going to be given the right to decide on what fixed terms are used, and more importantly weather or not to apply the new powers to the existing tenants. So its entirely likely these new powers will serve absolutely no purpose in the long run.

I suspect that the councils controlled by the conservatives is the one most likely to take advantage of this scheme. It is however not the message they want to be sending: Get Rich, Get Evicted.

Weapons of Mass Destruction to be installed in South Korea

Published by calhoun on November 23rd, 2010 - in News, Politics

Nuclear SymbolNuclear weapons have been in the limelight today in two major nuclear related developments.

The Court of Appeal of the United Kingdom has ruled against war veterans exposed to nuclear weapon tests. The court found that the time frame had expired for the veterans to bring legal action against the Ministry of Defence for radiation exposure during tests which they blame for their health conditions. It is a failure of justice.

Further to that, in response to North Korea having an uranium enrichment facility, South Korea has announced that it is open to the possibility of the United States installing Tactical Nuclear weapons in South Korea.

Once again the United States would be going down a direction that no one wants. Demilitarization of Nuclear warheads not expansion of their nuclear arsenal.

The Koreans however have played down the comments declaring that the idea of nuclear warheads being positioned in South Korea is a taboo subject matter.

The Pope Wants Safer Sex

Published by calhoun on November 20th, 2010 - in Politics

Pope CondomsThe condom has arguably been around since the ancient times in some size shape or form. In its more “modern” form it has been in use since the 1800′s in classic rubber variety. Schools around the world teach that the use of the magic barrier can prevent sexually transmitted infections most commonly associated with HIV/Aids. As a side effect it also prevents accidental “mini-me’s” showing up months later so all round its a great tool.

It sucks then that Catholics officially were not allowed to use this simple but super invention. The Vatican has had an absolute ban on the use of contraceptives for decades. The policy which means that they would rather see the world fill of accidental children and generations wiped out due to sexual disease.
The news should come as welcome and is expected to be officially published in a book of a face to face interview with the pope next week. Naturally of course, the Vatican managed to twist it into a barbaric twisted view of the positive.

for example
when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be … a first bit of responsibility, to redevelop the understanding that not everything is permitted and that one may not do everything one wishes.

The official view will become that if you are using the condom to prevent disease and death then its quite positively acceptable as it has moral superiorness at its heart. But if your using it for one night stands and out of marriage sex purposes, well, your still going straight to hell!

The political ‘U-turn’ could have been a result of seeing huge political outcry against his 2009 remarks in an official visit to Africa stating that the use of Condoms would : “condoms would not resolve the Aids problem there[Africa] but, on the contrary, increase it.” Of course it wont resolve, but It would reduce significantly the problem and that at least is worth fighting for.

Free Security: Four tips to protect your computer.

Published by calhoun on November 19th, 2010 - in Technology

Today I got a call from a friend in distress over a call he had received about his computer “letting in viruses” he wanted to know If it sounded like a genuine call. To be honest, any one calling out of the blue about the security of your computer unless your in a security management contract of some kind is most likely cheap tactics to scare you into buying expensive products. With them suggesting a 1 to 8 year license it sounds like this one definitely fell into the category.

Lets take a look at the key products to secure your PC with.

avast Anti VirusLets start with your anti virus software. These days the definition of virus and spy-ware or malware has became very vague indeed. Many programs that would traditionally be considered an anti virus program can detect more than just Viruses. Software designed to do serious harm to your computer. This is where avast comes in. This is one of the best free anti virus programs on the market.

The free package just gives you a basic virus scanner but upgrades to premium packages which offer you services such as anti-spam mail filtering and protection from phishing - sites and emails that are designed to fool you into thinking you are giving details to a legitimate organization such as a bank.

I mentioned already about Spyware and Malware and there is two nice programs that handle it quite nicely. In fact, I am running a live system scan with one right now.

Ad-Aware Anti Malware The people at Lavasoft have put together a nice program called Ad-Aware, the free edition lacks the ability to run in real time so you need to remember to manually update and scan your system with this one, or upgrade and get the automatic and real time system included. Continuing to work with the free edition might be best however, because of our next player in this market. They have problems co-existing it seems. But run them at separate times and you’ll be left with a nice clean system.

Spybot Search and DestroyWe could not have any form of protection article and not at least mention Spybot, this fast little tool supports the ability to immunize your system to reduce the likelihood of problems in the future. This is my personal favourite. As mentioned before, this and Ad-Aware seem to dislike each other, they are both fine tools and used together increases the protection but you must only run one at a time or you’ll end up with conflicts between the two, when you start Spybot with Ad-Aware installed it will warn you of the conflict.

Firewalls are an important aspect to the security of your computer although a software firewall can be no match to using a hardware network based firewall which is generally what I rely upon and use software firewalls more as a warning in the event of a possible breach it will flag up to say there is an intrusion. But for completeness sake under a new brand, GFI, I have used the firewall software since it was first released two owners previously. The personal firewall software as their own description says, does not slow down the computer it is indeed rather speedy and I have enjoyed the flexibility of it. Like the previous applications a free edition is available.

How do they compare against Norton and McAfee?

In my experience both Norton and McAfee have ran extremely slowly on computers and generally cause more problems than they actually prevent.  These disturbingly come with PCs provided by a great number of major retailers , and this often fools people into thinking they have adequate security. This is often not the case, many of these users do not realise that this kind of software needs to be updated frequently, and the packages included on new pcs are often only 30 day trials so a month down the line they stop working and offer no protection at all. You should avoid using them if you want your PC to be secure.

You might also want to consider switching away from Windows whilst your at it, but that’s another story perhaps one for another time, a quick guide to switching to Linux for newbies. Look out for that one!

Italy vote of no confidence could see Berlusconi leave office

Published by calhoun on November 14th, 2010 - in News, Politics

He may be a prime minster, but he also seems to have paedophilia tendencies with a strong urge for sexual encounters and a tyrannical government style. Prime Minister of Italy Berlusconi could soon be out of a job however. He stated on Saturday that the government he leads will be put through a confidence vote. Which as a result should they lose the vote, he would be mandated to resign in his position.

This will be a good thing for the Italian government should they lose the vote, if the opposition is unable to form a new government then a general election will be called for. This will hopefully put a more civilized man into the position of prime minister and see Berlusconi leave politics once and for all.

Who can spend £51 million on a vase?

Published by calhoun on November 12th, 2010 - in News

51Million for a VaseApparently we will never find out, because the buyer of the auction is a anonymous bidder all we will know is he(or she) is from china. What we can determine from this however is a significant amount of information.

The person is in China.
They collect Chinese vases
They must be at least a multi-millionaire but probably billionaire.

And apparently they like vases .

Its insane I think.  Even if I had that kind of money I doubt it’d spend it on a vase. Although I am prepared to take the challenge so if someone can transfer me £51 Million and i’ll let you know if I buy a stupidly expensive vase. Which incidentally was expected to go for between £800K and £1.2 Million Something tells me the seller will be very pleased with the sale.

Whats this, a conservative with a clue?

Published by calhoun on November 12th, 2010 - in Politics

Iain Duncan SmithSurely this is a first time in the history of the conservative party. Reading about what he plans to do in order to fix the benefits system, the secretary of state for the department of work and pensions has perhaps spotted an important point.

Backed by the prime minister they seem to have worked out that benefits are nessesary for the average working person to survive the British Economy. David Cameron states: “It simply has to pay to work. You cannot have a situation where if someone gets out of bed and goes and does a hard day’s work they end up worse off.”

This is unfortunately the situation which has existed until now, which can really only be rectified by increasing the minimum wage. When people start earning enough that they can pay for the bills instead of having to claim benefits so they can be in a financially strong position to afford the council tax it is a bad sign. They however do not go so far as to indicate their plans to actually resolve the problem.

The first step to fixing a problem like this however is admitting there is a problem so there may be hope for this government after all. Until now the conservatives have been all about getting people off benefits, but without admitting this, all they have been trying to do is cut costs with no tangible means of changing the problem.

Jobless to clean Rubish for £1

Published by calhoun on November 7th, 2010 - in Politics

Iain Duncan Smith the secretary of state for the department of work and pensions has announced new plans to see people who “choose” to live off benefits cast to low skilled jobs by force. Clearing the streets of rubbish and gardening and the likes. He is under the misunderstanding that people who are on benefits are on very low income. I was there at the start of this year.

Whilst I was on benefits, they refused to pay for me to get into the job center to search for jobs, or to come into the city center to hand out CVs. In fact the only thing I got out of the job seekers was a suit for an interview – which incidentally I didn’t get the job for and I had to fight them to get it. The job seekers allowance as it stands is a joke. They think people can live on that little. To make it worse, they take far too long to process claims. I was actually working for months before they sent us any money. Which considering our circumstances was rather appalling for a benefits agency. Then when I had got a job, my jobless partner with no money was told he cannot claim for job seekers allowance because I was working, I fail to see the relevance there.

What reason he has for not giving minimum wage for this work I cannot understand. They would be serving a beneficial service to society that the councils seem to be unwilling or unprepared to offer themselves. This would make the country look like a place that one might actually want to visit and encourage tourism instead.

The scheme would see people whom have been placed on the scheme taken off the normal job seekers allowance and put on a £1 an hour, 30 hours a week (so yeah, £30 a week to survive on) system. Its likely to serve as an increase in depression and suicide if you ask me.

The UK has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe, and with the government cutting more than half a million people from the employed status is it really a surprise. These cuts will take decades to figure out what the true cost of them really will be.
