Dog Attacks Girl Owner Blames games!

Published by calhoun on September 30th, 2010 - in Technology

Dog AttackA breed of dog which is a hybrid of the Old English Bull Dog (The aggressive one used in blood sports) and  a the huge English Mastiff, the Bullmastiff has characteristics of both types of dog – it is large and it can become an aggressive dog.

It is no surprise then that an unsupervised child in the same room as this huge aggressive beast could lead to the situation where said child finds they are under attack by the dog. That was what happened with Megan Walker.

Her grand mother blaming the attack on playing NintendoDog yet it is clear that if the dog had been muzzled to prevent attacks, the possibility of an attack on the girl would be limited to far less violent headbutting and cuddling.

Dragging the girl aggressively off the sofa and biting multiple times the dog managed to chew off the upper lip from the child. Luckily, the detached lip was put on ice and taken by police to the hospital where surgons were able to successfully reattach it.

When the Grand mother realised what was going on, she started kicking the dog and with the help of their second dog which also was attacking in order to  save the child. Given that claiming that it was the game’s fault that the dog attacked is mostly ridiculous. If the dog was provoked by sounds coming from the game then surely the other dog would have had a similar reaction.

Due to the dangerous animal status, the dog has been terminated.

MoD Security breach – Government in chaos

Published by calhoun on September 29th, 2010 - in News, Politics

A police investigation has been instigated to search the Ministry of Defense in relation to a leaked letter from Liam Fox to the Prime Minister. In his position as secretary of state for defense, this letter which reportedly he was not copying anyone else in, represents a major security breach for a department that privacy and security should be a number one concern.

He raises concerns over the ability of the MoD to protect the UK and its interests which in its on right is concerning. If the MoD cannot defend us with what resources we have then surely we should not be facing war on so many fronts as we have. The first step of the government should take in this aspect is to withdraw troops from invasion forces across the world. Bring them home and start working on a program that would allow us to defend ourselves with overwhelming skill in the event of an attack against the borders of the United Kingdom. We must become a neutral state and forge strong defense ties such as with Europe and NATO.

Last I checked, the UK Military expenditure came second only to the United States. Even the mighty Russian federation spend less than we do! Great.

If the government is serious about making cuts then they must do this, if they are not prepared to become a neutral state then we cannot afford to cut costs on the military we need the technology to ensure the troops are safe and able to perform their duties.

Ninja Monkies gaurd the Commonwealth Games

Published by calhoun on September 28th, 2010 - in News

Commonwealth Monkies It sounds like something out of some US Army Zombie experimentation but alas this is on the other side of the world. India has decided to deal with the issues of wildlife in the commonwealth village by having an army of trained ninja monkies gaurd the permiter.

The latest shows the games are underprepared and definately not in a quality as should be expected for the commonwealth games. With deadly cobra snakes infesting the apartments for the athleats, monkies picking a fight with humans.

With any luck the army of trained monkies might be able to help deal with the problems that the organizers are failing to deal with.

Goat Marrige calls from boys on twitter!

Published by calhoun on September 27th, 2010 - in News

goat An alarming number of people have been posting on twitter about relationships with goats. Perhaps it is time for the law to be revised to open up marriage between the boys and the goats. It is in the interest of equal opportunities and equal rights of course!

In all seriousness hoewver, it turns out that Twitter is facing the second worm in the space of a week. It highlights the potential security issues associated with using Twitter, again. The users seem like they are not going to learn.

This time it was caused by basically the same flaw as the previous one with much the same effect. However this time the resulting messages seem to be all more or less the same content. The users of the site have realised they have been accidental posting humiliating content about their relationships with goats.

Given the nature of this threat and the similarity to the previous attack I wonder if this has been generated by the same hacker. Instead of merely hovering over the link this time you had to actually click on the link. The security aspects of preventing it need to be seriously considered by Twitter as part of a solid security review, and the sooner they start the better.

Darling quits leaving stark warning about deficit

Published by calhoun on September 27th, 2010 - in News, Politics

Alistor DarlingHe served under Gordon Brown as the Chancellor, now they are in opposition however he wants to wipe his hands clean of the problem. Leaving behind a financial disaster for the UK, Darling has warned the Labour party that they cant just ignore the problem and hope it goes away. Instead they must deal with it, but its not his problem any more.

He made a point about speeches at the conference being hard for him, because of the difference between what he had to say and what they wanted to hear. Or in other words, the Labour party hasn’t got a clue whatsoever in how to deal with the deficit and he doesn’t feel like giving clues to his successor in the party – more likely he hasn’t a clue either.

Accusing the Coalition government he suggests that the previous government’s spending had nothing to do with the deficit it was all the Banker’s fault. Of course, given that the 2009 budget done by him saw the UK Government spend approximately £100 Million a year more than it earned, It is a disgrace for him to even suggest that poor financial management on the part of the government had nothing to do with it. What he needs is to go back to school and learn how to do accountancy. Spending more than you can afford has left many people (and even many countries) in serious financial problems. The collapse of the financial sector has indeed contributed to problems but they are not exclusively to blame for the deficit.

United Nations ambassador to ET

Published by calhoun on September 27th, 2010 - in News

AlienThe United Nations apparently is not cutting services like our government is. They are looking at opening the position of Ambassador to aliens should we make first contact with an extra terrestrial life.

The 58 year old woman in charge of the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs is the front runner for the job, it makes sense he has all the skills needed, being a senior manager in the UN she must have some form of political skill.

The outer space treaty means that the nations of Earth will protect earth from contamination by extra terrestrial life. The future ambassador wants a rather more tolerant approach to dealing with arrivals.

Professor Hawking observes that the mathematical probabilities makes it very reasonable to consider the possibility of extra terrestrial life. Moreover, he warns against actively seeking communication with extra terrestrial amid fears they are likely to be cruising the galaxy in search of resources and colonies to settle down on. Referring to our own species he thinks it is clear that another life form could easily grow into something we don’t want to meet.

Manchester: Concrete Blocks, Yellow Barriers and an army of uniforms but we got in anyway.

Published by calhoun on September 26th, 2010 - in News, Politics

Road Block Its Saturday and for the ordinary citizen heading to enjoy a well earned end of the week Caramel Latte at Starbucks, you would be forgiven for thinking that following the road and passing metal detecting style arches, huge concrete blocks surrounded by metal walls and bright yellow solid steel barriers protected by heavy numbers of police officers for thinking you’d entered a war zone.

However that is the scene today (and for the rest of the week) in Manchester City Center. You see the Labour party and going by what we saw, in its entirety, is here for the annual Labour Conference 2010.

They have setup just around the corner from my office as a matter of fact. The problem will really be on Monday for today I passed through simply for my desire to have a coffee to pass the time waiting for my train home. Unfortunately it also turns out it was about the same time as the end of the events of the day. On Monday the conference gets properly started.

Will new labour have anything worth offering? Today has seen them unveil their new leader in the form of Ed Miliband, who won the labour leadership post on the final round of votes wining by just 1.3%.

In his victory speech he encourages young people to zombie-like convert to the labour party – I’d rather they didn’t however.ed-miliband Despite his claim that a “new generation” is in control of Labour now, at 41 he certainly isn’t a huge leap of from his predecessor. Many have lost faith in our political system and although the government is trying to shift that trend with the clean up of politics it has a long way to go. Perhaps the time to see the rise of a new party in politics is upon us.

A party that is prepared to be connected with the people too often I have seen MPs being critizied for not understanding whats going on at the level of the peasants they have lost touch with reality. I  should expect that if I had decided to run for a political movement many actions would be taken such as reducing significantly the wages of the political figures, increase the minimum wage and setup the UK as a more neutral state we neither have the time nor inclination to deal with war on multiple fronts.

Has anyone else noticed how in almost every picture of him, he has a certain confused and distracted or otherwise distant and not content with reality sort of look to him? I don’t know if he can be trusted but I guess time will let the Labour party decide that themselves. Good luck to him in his new job, something tells me hes going to need it.

Government: Sorry, we cant afford the justice system its going.

Published by calhoun on September 24th, 2010 - in News, Politics

Cold Dark WorldThe latest news of cuts does not look encouraging for the UK. With some of the agencies under review or to be abolished I for one am struggling to see the current government as a practical approach to running the UK.

The plan to deal with the huge deficit in the UK budget may see the debt paid off in full by the end of the year. Unfortunately, there would not be a country left to run after it has been. The government needs to seriously consider what it is doing carefully or face a prospect of a country that business and even the people do not see as a viable country to operate and trade in.

There are literally hundreds of bodies currently stated funded that are bracing for abolishment. Some of these I have never heard of, some sound very important and should not ever be meddled with. The Administrative Justice and Tribunals Council – they over see the Administrative Justice System. They are now on the list to be abolished – I mean who needs justice anyway?

The Courts Board and Crown Court Rule Committee are on the way out as well, the HM Inspectorate of Court Administration might want to update their CV too.  Legal Deposit Advisory Panel, Legal Services Commission and Legal Services Ombudsman – they probably don’t do anything either? Maqistrates’ Court Rule Committee we must have too many court staff lets just get rid of due process we’ll go straight to the chopping board instead – it’ll save money and time.

It doesn’t stop there, the crown prosecution service is to be fiddled with too likely reduced in size which is probably a good thing we wont have any courts left to send the criminals to trial to anyway. Especially with the UK Supreme Court under review for the ax too! One of the most important changes in UK Justice in many years and they think they can just abolish it shortly after it came into existence unbelievable. The Civil Justice Council faces the same review.

Numerous committees looking into infections and health and a few dozen other miscellaneous bodies ranking from historical ship wrecks to Disability Employment Advisory Committee. I presume we don’t need to teach any more in this scary future because the General Teaching Council of England is no longer to exist too.

Equality and Human Rights Commission  and the Office for Fair Trading do we honestly want to drop them? But they are in review so there is hope.

Whilst you consider your thoughts on this I’m going to find Excalibur I think the hour of our greatest need is fast approaching.

Could an MP live on £3 a day?

Published by calhoun on September 24th, 2010 - in Politics

With all the cuts going on with the current government perhaps they forget what living in the UK is really like. Who can blame them with their state funded mansions and country holiday homes and business first class trips all around the world ? I know I’ve adapted nicely to being paid more than minimum wage, and I don’t want to go back. But I have not forgotten the horror of the past I have came from.

The National Minimum Wage is to put simply a Joke. Currently set at £5.80. Lets break that down.

Gross Wage: £232 (based on 40 hours)
National Insurance: £13.42
Tax: £34.92
Net Wage: £197.08

Monthly Wage: £854
Rent: £400
Gas and Electricity: £100
Food and Drink: £200
Transport Costs: £100
Net Monthly Wage: £54

Now lets pay the council tax … err£100?

Monthly Spending Money: £-46

So we apply for working tax credits and council tax and local housing benefits, say £150 a month if we’re lucky?

So putting that into the equation our new monthly wage is £104 ,  £3 a day plus £0.4 that you can save up for a holiday on.

The so called benefits life style is really not a lifestyle choice , its more of a we’re over taxed and under represented by our parliament. Surely if the MPs believe that this is a fair amount they wont mind living off of that themselves? They can get a modest 1 bedroom flat paid for, with basic food and drink and a subway or bus pass to get to parliament and a £3 a day allowance for a year. I wonder how quickly there will be a bill brought to the house about a new rather significant rise in minimum wage?

Piracy off the coast of Shetland

Published by calhoun on September 23rd, 2010 - in Politics

Greenpeace PiracyAttacks upon ships in the waters of the north sea by the Greenpeace activists are nothing less than an act of piracy. Preventing a ship and crew from serving its duties is not going to achieve anything other than general distaste and distrust of Greenpeace.

They say that the oil company behind the ship is trying to make people think they are in danger but they really are not. In that case, the ship should set sail to its destination and drop its anchor when it reaches the destination. Surely if they are in no danger they wont mind the ship continuing to work with them in the way.

In the past, such attacks would have warranted a military response why should it change just because its Greenpeace? Their track record is not exactly one of an honourable organization. If they want people to move away from oil then they should take up more practical and sane means of achieving it. Start researching means to provide cheaper more environmentally friendly technology for generating energy. It should be noted that their own ship, is not an environmentally friendly one so by trying to prevent oil harvesting they are in effect trying to shut down themselves.
